In 2005 a mosque in the 19th district of Paris was demolished without money to rebuild it. The mosque was moved to a temporary location, a disused bus hangar in La Villette on the perimeter of Paris. The majority of inhabitants of the 19th district are French citizens of West African and North African descent. It is the front line of gentrification. Social housing is being renovated on a large scale. Yet the rubble of the 39 Rue de Tanger Mosque sits.   

‘Does the bus stop here?' uses field recordings made by the artist at the site of the demolished mosque, and inside the bus hangar and selected mosques and prayer spaces in Paris and London to articulate what are some of the most contested spaces in European cities.  

Realised in the form of a multi-channel sound installation, ‘Does the Bus Stop here?' is a critical response to Openvizor's ongoing research project Paris 19: Mobility, Memory and Migration (Andres Borda, David Kendall, Dr. Moustafa Traoré, Abbas Nokhasteh) which produces new aural/visual discourse about spatial division, social conflict/cohesion, assimilation, integration, citizenship and migration in contemporary French society.     

Nabil Ahmed is an artist, writer, and musician who lives and works in London. He is co-founder of Call & Response, a sound art curatorial project based in London. He is currently a PhD candidate at the Centre for Research Architecture at Goldsmiths London.   

Füsun Türetken is an artist, writer, and architect who lives and works in Berlin and London. She is currently a PhD candidate at the Centre for Research Architecture at Goldsmiths London and was previously Director of the German Pavilion at 2008 Venice Architecture Biennale, editor of Faith in the City, Istanbul City of Intersections, Updating Germany and Shrinking Cities.  

Abbas Nokhasteh is founder of Openvizor, an international non-profit arts and cultural organisation. Openvizor builds multi-disciplinary partnerships and projects with formal and informal networks that combine practical knowledge and research, learning from each other in collaborations exploring alternative processes and models of expression, education and organisation from the ground up. He is a graduate of Kings College London and Imperial College London.

2005 yılında Paris’in 19. Bölgesindeki bir cami yeniden inşa edecek para olmadan yıkıldı. Cami geçici bir yere, Paris çevresindeki La Vilette’de, kullanılmayan bir otobüs hangarına taşındı. 19. Bölgenin sakinleri ağırlıklı olarak Batı Afrika ve Kuzey Afrika kökenli. Burjuvalaştırılmanın cephesi. Sosyal konutlar büyük ölçüde tamir ediliyor. Ancak 39 Rue de Tanger Camisinin enkazı duruyor.

‘Otobüs Burada Duruyor Mu?’ sanatçının yıkılan cami alanından ve otobüs hangarının içerisinden ve Paris ve Londra’dan seçilmiş cami ve dua sahnelerinden oluşturduğu alan kayıtlarını, Avrupa şehirlerinin en tartışmaya açık alanlarının bazılarını dile getirmek üzere kullanıyor.

Çok kanallı ses enstalâsyonu şeklinde hazırlanan ‘Otobüs Burada Duruyor Mu?’, çağdaş Fransız toplumundaki alansal bölünme, sosyal çatışma/birleşme, asimilasyon, bütünleşme, vatandaşlık ve göç konusunda yeni işitsel/görsel söylem yaratan Openvizor’ün Paris 19: Hareketlilik, Hafıza ve Göç (Andres Borda, David Kendall, Dr. Moustafa Traoré, Abbas Nokhasteh) adlı devam etmekte olan araştırma projesine ciddi bir yanıt.

Nabil Ahmed, Londra’ya yaşayan ve çalışan bir sanatçı, yazar ve müzisyen. Londra merkezli bir ses sanat küratörlüğü projesi olan Call&Response’in kurucularından birisi.  Ahmed, hâlihazırda Goldsmiths Londra’daki Mimari Araştırma Merkezinden Doktorasını almaya aday.

Füsun Türetken, Berlin ve Londra yaşayan ve çalışan bir sanatçı, yazar ve mimar. Hâlihazırda Goldsmiths Londra’daki Mimari Araştırma Merkezinden Doktorasını almaya aday ve öncesinde de 2008 Venedik Mimari Bienalinde Alman Pavyonun direktörlüğünü, Faith in the City (Şehirde İnanç), Istanbul City of Intersections (İstanbul, Kesişmelerin Şehri), Updating Germany (Almanya’yı Güncellemek) ve Shrinking Cities (Küçülen Şehirler)’in editörlüğünü yapmıştır.

Abbas Nokhasteh, uluslararası kar amacı gütmeyen bir sanat ve kültür organizasyonu olan Openvior’ün kurucusudur. Openvizor, pratik bilgi ve araştırmayı, işbirlikleri ile birbirinden öğrenmeyi, alternatif süreçler ve ifade modelleri araştırmayı, eğitim ve organizasyonu her yönüyle birleştiren resmi ve gayri resmi ağlar ile çoklu disiplinli ortaklıklar ve projeler oluşturur. Kings College Londra ve Imperial College Londra’dan mezundur.
