A vast L-shaped wall erected in the middle of the gallery acts as the projection screen in this work. The images of the crumbling architecture of the UNESCO headquarters in Paris play back-to-back with images of an avalanche on Mt Cook (a UNESCO-protected area) in New Zealand. Presented in a mirror format, each video resembles an enormous, constantly morphing Rorschach blot. The soundtrack is a recording of ambient sounds from Tongariro National Park (also a UNESCO-protected area) in New Zealand mixed with the sounds of the flapping flags, recorded outside the United Nations Headquarters in New York.

This work captures the way our sense of physical location is complicated by our access to and possession of information. Our experience of place in the 21st Century is now affected by movement, history, cultural knowledge, extreme climate change and an increasingly 'virtual' web of global communications. The question “Where are we?” seems to defy any single answer.

About Mladen Bizumic

Born in Belgrade in 1976, Mladen Bizumic grew up in New Zealand. He now lives and works in Berlin.

Mladen Bizumic works in video, sound, photography, sculpture and other media by exploring relationships between subjectivity and representation, physical locations and psychological states, memory and present. He regularly uses the pre-existing cultural material as a scenario that is dismantled so that new one can be constructed to reveal the ‘unconscious’ of human production.

Often he invites other artists, musicians, or other professionals to collaborate on exhibitions, presenting them as 'translational' models. By questioning the meaning of various cultural structures Bizumic systematically explores the bonds that unite individuals, groups, and images and produces new possible relationships and connections.
