New Indian Art from the Frank Cohen Collection
From 15 March to 2 August 2008
Press release attached at the bottom of this page

Passage to India is the fourth exhibition at Initial Access and will present new Indian art from the Frank Cohen Collection. It will showcase a selection of important painting and sculpture by a new generation of artists from India who are starting to take centre stage in the international contemporary art world.

In the wake of overwhelming attention being paid to contemporary art from China, interest is growing in a new generation of artists from India. Always at
the forefront of the latest developments in contemporary art globally, the Frank Cohen Collection has been acquiring works of sculpture and painting from India over the past two years, visiting artists’ studios and galleries throughout the country.

Although these artists are influenced by global developments in contemporary art and exposure to the international art world, they maintain a relationship with Western art that is based on an identity rooted in the sub-continent.

For Western audiences there is an inevitable attraction towards the exotic, but for many years artists from India have been following their own trajectory that
is a part of the economic and social developments occurring throughout modern Asia. The richness in this new art owes something to its cultural history,
but its concerns are those of today as the artists examine the currents of contemporary life that are experienced by people world wide.

Initial Access opened on 19 January 2007, as a space to present exhibitions from Frank Cohen’s internationally important collection of contemporary art. It is sited on the outskirts of the millennium city of Wolverhampton, in two refurbished warehouses that provide 10,000 sq feet of exhibition space. Initial Access presents different aspects of the Collection in a series of exhibitions curated by David Thorp. The programme is designed to mount shows of new acquisitions to the collection, explore themes among works that may not have been seen before and give the public an opportunity to see more of the collection currently in store.

The Frank Cohen Collection is one of the largest and most contemporary collections of art in the UK. It contains artworks by the stars of the artworld alongside the young cutting edge.

Initial Access is 10,000 sq feet of exhibition space converted from two industrial 'sheds' into a light and spacious gallery in which you can see works from the Frank Cohen Collection in three exhibitions a year curated by David Thorp.

The Frank Cohen Collection is going on public view with the aim of showing the general public and art lovers throughout the UK and abroad, the range and depth of the Collection. The Initial Access exhibition programme complements the thriving contemporary art scene in the region and brings something unique to it - the very latest developments in contemporary art in the context of one man's vision.
